Watch Spotting The Watches & Fashion Of Met Gala 2025

On a night celebrating the legacy of Black dandyism, we check out the best watches and looks, too.

Once a quiet fundraiser for New York's elite, the Met Gala has become fashion's biggest spectacle — where the looks are loud and the post-event commentary is even louder. But this year, beneath the surface-level flash, there was a deeper current at play — one rooted in history, identity, and the politics of style. "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," coincided with the Costume Institute's first menswear-focused exhibition in two decades, and its first to center Black fashion entirely. The exhibition, curated by Monica L. Miller and conceived by Andrew Bolton, traces the lineage of Black dandyism — the art of dressing with precision, intention, and self-possession.

The garments on view — from Frederick Douglass's worn tailcoat and non-prescription sunglasses to Virgil Abloh's crisp white Louis Vuitton suit edged in kente cloth — tell a story not just of style, but of agency. Dressing, for the Black dandy, has always been a form of communication, a negotiation, a defense — and at times, an act of self-regard: a way to affirm one's worth through elegance, even in the face of erasure.

This year, analysing the parade of glamor that is the Met Gala isn't just a chance to satisfy our (often closeted) obsession with what celebrities are wearing, it's a chance to explore how horology fits into a cultural lineage of expression, resilience, and beauty.

Here are our picks for some of the best watches from Met Gala '25.
